🎩 Tip: Amazon translations
2 weeks ago I ran into my friend Oscar Nogueras (CEO at Ontranslation) and we were discussing some issues we find with clients, especially those who want to expand cross-border sales and use Google Translate, Deepl, or ChatGPT to translate product listings.
The problem is that, often, these translations fall short. It's a shame because many products are perfect for markets like the French or German ones, but sales don't take off.
Oscar told me about one of his clients, Temple Spring. A best seller in the United Kingdom in the bathroom products category. They contacted Ontranslation to improve their listings and increase sales in France and Germany, knowing that in these countries, "bathtub trays" are used, but they still couldn't sell.
Considering that these markets are highly sensitive to language, automatic translation does not work properly, especially in medium to high-priced products, it is necessary to conduct native keyword research that identifies how and what expressions are used to refer to your products.
This goes beyond keyword research tools. Obviously, you need to know the market and its culture.
As Ontranslation offers an SEO translation service for Amazon, after researching the market, they found the following.
DE Google Translate: Badewannentablett
DE Helium and competitors: Badewannenablage
FR Google Translate: plateau de bain
FR Helium and competitors: Planche bain baignoire
Let's take a look at the difference in searches between the one Google Translate gives you vs the properly translated one. This is Helium 10’s Magnet data:
I have no further questions, Your Honor.
That's why translations shouldn't be left in the hands of automation :P
That’s why I always recommend a translation agency such as OnTranslation.
